ISO 14001 is changing – early planning will make the transition smoother

ISO 14001 has been revised, with the new ISO 14001:2026 Environmental Management System standard published in April 2026.
Organisations certified to ISO 14001:2015 will need to transition to the updated standard within the formal three-year transition period, ending 30 April 2029, to maintain certification validity. Aligning the transition with planned surveillance or recertification audits can help make the process smoother, reduce last-minute pressure and support continuity of certification.

What are the key changes to ISO 14001:2026?
- Context: Organisations will need to consider environmental context factors such as pollution levels, natural resources, climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem health
- Scope: The scope of the EMS must consider the lifecycle of activities, products and services
- Environmental aspects: Environmental aspects must explicitly consider normal and abnormal operating conditions
- Risks and opportunities: New clause 6.1.4 covers risks and opportunities, with planning action moving to clause 6.1.5
- Planning of changes: New clause 6.3 introduces requirements for planning changes
- Emergency preparedness: Wording shifts to “potential emergency situations”
- Internal audits: Internal audit programmes will need clearly defined audit objectives
- Management review: Requirements are now split across clauses 9.3.1 General, 9.3.2 Management Review Inputs and 9.3.3 Management Review Results
- Continual improvement: Continual improvement requirements have been restructured, with clause 10.1 renamed and clause 10.3 removed
